在英国记者Kenneth Allsop的提议下，列侬着手写了一首关于自己童年的歌,最初手稿写的是他小时候在利物浦坐公交车沿途所见的风景，像Penny Lane和Strawberry Field

首稿完成后，Lennon说歌词就像"the most boring sortof 'What I Did On My Holidays Bus Trip' song"（无聊的公交车一日游之歌），经过多次修改后，首稿中只有几句保留了下来

Lennon的一生挚友Peter Shotton说歌词中 “Some[friends] are dead and some are living/In my life I’ve loved them all”中分别代指Stuart Sutcliffe和自己，同为Lennon挚友的Sutcliffe退出披头士乐队（当时还未称作the Beatles），去德国深造绘画，1962年在送往医院的途中因动脉瘤死亡

在1980年的采访中，John Lennon说到，在此之前他从来没有把自己的故事写进歌里，所以这首歌在他心目中才是“first real master piece of work”
