Hello from Palm Springs... We are around 4 months into our 9 month tour of America, and we are loving every minute! To meet so many wonderful people after the show each night is heart warming... To perform to sell out audiences on a 20th anniversary tour is exhilarating and humbling. Meeting dancers after the show we are often asked the same questions. How can we be where you are? How do we get there? Who can we call? Now unfortunately there is no secret tip or trick, magic potion or insiders formula to professional dancing. But I can tell you this. If you put yourself out there, attend workshops / Summer Schools / Seminars, anything that's on offer, dance those free gigs for experience, try to take in and understand every bit of the industry you possibly can. Then this can prepare you, and essentially turn you into the best show dancer you could possibly be. With the interest in professional show dancing on the rise, top companies have limited places that are harder and harder to obtain. To start, decide what kind of dance career you would like and make a plan or list of goals to achieve for yourself. Don't set your goals by comparing to what peers or colleagues have now or what they have done in the past. Aspire and be inspired yes, but remember that every journey is different to yours. YOU are UNIQUE. Sending your CV to just a select few shows may close you off from an incredible amount of experience, and holding out for your favourite productions could result in you waiting for two to three years just to get a call back. That's two to three years experience you could have under your belt by the time your favourite show calls you up for an audition. Experience = confidence and confidence is everything, so widen your expectations and do some research. You will find that there are lots of companies to build your experience and start your career with. My very first show application was to Riverdance. The original irish dance show. They turned me down. 8 years later I am stepping out as a lead dancer with the first company to tell me 'no'. Never give up. Be honest, be brave, be graceful. Follow your passion. Embrace mistakes & most importantly, be yourself. C x
